In 2008, Disney announced that they would be producing a big summer blockbuster adaptation of The Lone Ranger, co-starring famed pirate of the Caribbean Johnny Depp as Tonto. In 2010 they announced that Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski would be directing. Now it's 2011 and they're only just now getting around to finding an actual Lone Ranger to star in the film. Say what you will, but you can't claim that they're rushing this baby out for a quick buck. And you sure as hell can't claim that they're trying to cater to the Twilight demographic now that indie darling Ryan Gosling is in talks to star.
Ryan Gosling may have warmed your hearts in The Notebook but for last few years of his career he's been focusing on Oscar bait like Blue Valentine, All Good Things and Half Nelson (the latter of which actually earned him a well-deserved nomination for Best Actor). Now his career's taking a shift for the mainstream, with the upcoming action flick Drive and the remake of Logan's Run all coming down the pipe one after the other, to possibly be followed by The Lone Ranger. He's an enormously talented actor and liable to play well off of Johnny Depp's schtick in the upcoming film, but bear in mind that Deadline is also reporting that Gosling is but one of several actors being considered for the lead role, and all the others are currently under wraps. So it's still possible that we'll be seeing some Robert Pattinson action in the upcoming remake.
Crave Online will be back with more Lone Ranger news, even though with that sidekick he ain't exactly 'lone.'
