Is Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘Django Unchained?’

Quentin Tarantino couldn't get him for Inglourious Basterds, but tries, tries again.

More casting news for Django Unchained, if rumors qualify as 'Casting News.' Oh, who are we kidding? It's entertainment journalism… Of course rumors count! Now Jeff Goldsmith – former Senior Editor of the vaunted Creative Screenwriting magazine – claims that Leonardo DiCaprio has been cast as the villain in Quentin Tarantino's anxiously awaited new western.

Quoth the Tweet: "Casting Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio WILL play villian [sic] Calvin Candie in Tarantino's Django Unchained! QT wanted him for I.B. & now has him!"

For the record, "I.B." in this context stands for "Inglourious Basterds," not "Irritable Bowel." DiCaprio was famously up for the role of Hans Landa in Tarantino's previous film, which ended up earning Christoph Waltz (also supposedly cast in Django Unchained) an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Depending on who you talk to DiCaprio either wanted the role but lost out to Waltz or, as we heard it, the part was written with DiCaprio in mind but fate stepped in and Tarantino ended up having to go in another direction.

Does Jeff Goldsmith have an inside track? Well, given his connections (evidenced by his former position at Creative Screenwriting) he just might. But if it's on Twitter we're always hesitant to take it as gospel, since little things like citing actual sources tend to come secondary in that environment. We love DiCaprio's work, of course, so we sure as hell wouldn't be complaining.

Crave Online will be back with more Django Unchained news. Sounds like the weirdest biography of Django Reinhardt we've ever heard of…
