There are those of us out there who want to see Disney's epic new retelling of The Lone Ranger if it's the last thing we ever do. Now it very well might be: Deadline is reporting that the expected blockbuster will be released on December 21st, 2012… the end of the world.

According to people who don't understand the Mayan calendar, that is.

Yes, the Mayan calendar 'ends' on December 21st, 2012, leading some to believe that it will mark the end of the world as we know it, be it by total global apocalypse or at best a new age of enlightenment. In the real world the Mayans saw no greater significance in the date, unless they just weren't fans of Westerns which, given what happened to the native peoples of the Americas during the western expansion, makes perfect damned sense.

The Lone Ranger will star Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Johnny Depp (oh, like you don't know who he is) as The Lone Ranger and Tonto, and will be directed by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski.

Crave Online will be back with more Lone Ranger news after we stock up on dry goods.
