Simply some words to the wise for all you Tinder lovers swiping right — use protection. There’s a new untreatable super gonorrhea sweeping the globe.

what

The World Health Organization released new data this week that should be absolutely terrifying for singles: each year about 78 million people are infected with gonorrhea; the STD is increasingly becoming drug resistant; And widespread resistance is especially prone to older and cheaper antibiotics in high-income countries.

WHO

Data from 77 countries show that antibiotic resistance is making gonorrhea – a common sexually-transmitted infection – much harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat.

“The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are particularly smart. Every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them,” said Dr Teodora Wi, Medical Officer, Human Reproduction, at WHO.

You can read more about the STD here. But essentially you can get the STD — also known as ‘The Clap’ — from any kind of sex, including oral sex.

It can infect the genitals, rectum and throat. And while, if left untreated, can make men sterile, complications can disproportionally affect women: pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility, increased risk of HIV. Four years ago there was a strain of gonorrhea that doctors feared could kill you in matter of days.

Doctors are blaming the wild spread to decreased condom use, increased urbanization and travel, poor infection detection rates and inadequate treatment.

Guys and gals, there’s never been a better time to get married.
