TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith succumbed to lung cancer and died Wednesday morning at the age of 34. Smith, who was diagnosed with the illness in early March, was forced to pull out of TV on the Radio's most recent tour in support of their new album in order to undergo treatment.
At the time of the diagnosis, the band had released a statement stating that Smith was receiving excellent medical treatment and was showing signs of improvement. Unfortunately, the survival rate for lung cancer is not very high at all, and Smith's battle ended a mere month or so after his diagnosis.
The band confirmed his death on their website:
"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly."
TV On The Radio also announced via their website that they’ve canceled five dates to mourn their fallen member. As far as we know, they still plan to play the other shows they have scheduled. Our thoughts go out to Gerard’s family and, of course, TVOTR.
