Even though we specifically didn’t ask for it, Warner Bros. announced today that they have hired a screenwriter for a planned reboot of the Lethal Weapon franchise. Deadline reports that former LAPD officer Will Beall, whose period cop drama Gangster Squad (about a group of cops taking down organized crime kingpins like Mickey Cohen) is also in production at the Dubba-Dubba WB, will handle the scripting duties. No director has been announced, although producer Joel Silver remains attached to the franchise.
After toying for a while with a Lethal Weapon 5 with original series screenwriter Shane Black (who also wrote Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which he also directed), apparently the Powers That Be decided to jump off the cliff too – hey, everyone else is doing – by jumpstarting the franchise with a younger cast. At least Beall’s take isn’t PG-13: He reportedly pitched a remake that will be an R-rated street level cop movie, more like the original, "Are you crazy?" Lethal Weapon than the over the top "You Really Are Crazy!" Lethal Weapon 4.
It hasn’t been officially announced, but a Mel Gibson cameo seems pretty unlikely at this point doesn’t it?
