CONFIRMED: Anne Hathaway Is Catwoman! And Tom Hardy Is Bane?!

Our long national nightmare is over: Academy Award-nominee Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle – aka Catwoman – in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Deadline is reporting that Hathaway has thoroughly whipped the competition – rumored to include Keira Knightley, Jessica Biel, Kate Mara and Charlotte Riley – for one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. All of those other actresses do still have a chance, one supposes, for a second female lead that has yet to be officially announced.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story," Nolan said. It’s a nice thing to say, although we wish he’d stop talking about the franchise like it’s over already.

In other Dark Knight Rises news, Inception star Tom Hardy’s unnamed villain finally has a name: Bane. One of Batman’s greatest nemeses, Bane once succeeded where no other villain could by defeated Batman in a battle of wits… and crushed spines. Horrifically disrespected in Batman & Robin (but then again who wasn’t?), Bane is a logical but surprising choice for a villain when more familiar icons like The Penguin, The Riddler and Doodlebug were available. Well, okay, maybe not Doodlebug…

Of Tom Hardy, Christopher Nolan gave the following statement: "I am delighted to be working with Tom again excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies."

"New interpretation" indeed. Bane originally hailed from the fictional Caribbean island of Santa Prisca, and he wasn’t white. Cue trumped-up controversy in three… two… one… Go for it, internet.
