Totals Recall - 1/17/11

Welcome to Totals Recall, CraveOnline’s weekly look at what Americans spent at the movie theater over the weekend and a handy comparison to what else those box office totals could have been applied to.

1. THE GREEN HORNET

HOW MUCH DID IT MAKE?

$34,000,000

WHAT COULD WE HAVE BOUGHT INSTEAD?

Two supercars (and two luxury yachts to keep them in)

The Black Beauty may be an awesome ride in the film update of the classic tv series/radio show, but that box office take could double up on the finest autos money can buy, adding a handy storage yacht that’s no doubt a bit classier than the average garage. (Fun fact: although it’s spelled "luxury yacht", it’s actually pronounced "Throatwobbler Mangrove".)

2. THE DILEMMA

HOW MUCH DID IT MAKE?

$17,419,000

WHAT COULD WE HAVE DONE INSTEAD?

Divorce Guy Ritchie

In the film, Vince Vaughn is worried that if his best friend finds out his wife is cheating, it could put their business in financial ruin. That problem would have been easily solved if Kevin James had just had the foresight to have married Madonna. In 2008, the celebrity couple split and the film director received $18 million as part of the settlement.

3. TRUE GRIT

HOW MUCH DID IT MAKE?

$11,200,000

WHAT COULD WE HAVE BOUGHT INSTEAD?

A Christmas Tree

While the tremendous box office success of True Grit was no doubt a brilliant Christmas present for Paramount (who released the film just days prior to the holiday), just one week’s in receipts could be cashed in for the most expensive Christmas tree of all time, set up last month in Dubai.

4. THE KING’S SPEECH

HOW MUCH DID IT MAKE?

$9,070,000

WHAT COULD WE HAVE BOUGHT INSTEAD?

Three Kings

Helping the King of England overcome his a stuttering problem, netted nine million this week. To make that much from the King of Rock and Roll, you’d have to prove he’s still alive three times over. Granted, the bizarre reward from Elviswanted can probably only be claimed once, but maybe you could track down Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, too.

5. BLACK SWAN

HOW MUCH DID IT MAKE?

$8,125,000

WHAT COULD WE HAVE BOUGHT INSTEAD?

Heidi Klum’s bra

Maybe it’s not a Mila Kunis/Natalie Portman lesbian sex scene, but paying Heidi Klum for the uber-expensive designer bra she wore on The Tonight Show still seems like a good way to lose eight million.

Thanks to Box Office Mojo for the financial statistics.
