Netflix Instant Watch for Gamers – Part II

Alex Keen returns for the second half of his look at Netflix Instant Movies and TV geared towards gamers!

You’re back!  I’m Alex from the gaming section but I love to dip my toes into the world of movies.  Since Netflix Instant Watch does a fantastic job of connecting movies and television to gaming consoles, I figured I should share my favorite movies and shows for gamers.  Last week I shared my first list of movies and here is the second batch!

First up is one the best war movies of the last decade.  Based on a novel of the same name, Jarhead features Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jamie Foxx as some marines fighting during the first Gulf War.  This is a good flick for gamers that are into Modern Warfare, Battlefield, and other FPS titles that feature modern warfare.  Unlike these games, Jarhead features quite a bit of time spent not fighting.  It paints a less professional picture of our modern military.  One that, although not flattering, feels closer to the truth than we might want to believe.  Jarhead is a great flick featuring some tense sniper battles that should entertain gamers while shedding a different perspective on modern warfare.

This should be the perfect fit for those of you that love car battle games like Twisted Metal, Vigilante 8, and Mario Kart (wink).  Mad Max is the first of three films featuring a dystopic Australia.  There is plenty of bloodshed and crashes featuring hot rods, motorcycles, and much more.  This monumental film is over thirty years old and still seems as fresh as when it was released.  If you like battle racers then you owe it to yourself to see the movie that created the genre (almost) before video games even existed.

Would it be unfair to stereotype some gamers as stoners?  Nah.  That’s why I am recommending you check out Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.  This comedy is chock full of weed jokes, pornographic comedy, and celebrity cameos.  While this may not go down as Kevin Smith’s best work, it is entertaining enough to burn through 90 minutes of your life.  I’m recommending this flick for gamers with the lowest sense of humor.  Maybe not Duke Nukem fans but that’s pretty darn close.  Also, keep a look out for both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame!

Easily one of the best indie comic book movies in recent years, Kick-Ass is the perfect relaxation movie for the guy or gal looking to watch someone else kick some ass.  This movie is about a regular kid who becomes a super hero and finds out that real kids in spandex can really get killed.  They’re not invincible.  I had a blast watching this movie and think that gamers especially into hard games might appreciate the painful realities of being a real super hero.

Finally, the lone television show on this list is South Park.  With 14 seasons of episodes, this hall of fame animated series has spent more time on video games than almost any other TV show.  Whether it was the launch of the Wii or the boys getting obsessed with World of Warcraft, South Park has ripped it all.  If you’ve never watched the show you should treat yourself to one of the best comedies of the modern era.

I hope you enjoyed the second part of this list.  If you have your own recommendations to add to this list, feel free to drop me at tweet @dbldn on twitter.  Thanks!
