Remember many, many moons ago when Sledgehammer Games was brought into Activision’s fold to work on a third-person action-adventure version of Call of Duty? Listen, we don’t hold it against you if you don’t remember such a moment in time. It was over a year ago.
Well, those plans aren’t dead just yet. While Sledgehammer is currently hunkering down with Infinity Ward to finish Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, there is a chance production on the action-adventure spin-off will begin once work on MW3 wraps. In fact, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg really wants to see that game get made. And when you have the CEO of your parent company on your side, chances are pretty good that you’ll be able to continue production without much opposition.
"Right now Sledgehammer's 100% focused on Modern Warfare 3," Hirshberg told IndustryGamers. "We haven't announced the future slate or future plans for the studio. They were originally working on an extension of the Call of Duty franchise into an action/adventure genre and that's a game I still want to play."
In my humble opinion, branching the Call of Duty franchise out to different genres is a great idea. If you read our musings here on Crave Gaming regularly, then you know we’re a little burnt out on the yearly Call of Duty regurgitation. Every year the settings change and the set pieces get bigger, but the core gameplay remains absolutely unchanged. We want change. We want evolution. Maybe an action-adventure Call of Duty title will deliver that and respark our interest in the franchise. Here’s hoping this pipe dream becomes a reality sooner rather than later.
