Oh, that's right… They're still remaking Robocop, aren't they? It's been a while since we've heard back from the project, which most recently signed Jose Padilha, the Brazilian director of The Elite Squad, to helm the picture. Now it appears that MGM is finally looking into casting. The top of their list? Chris Pine, the 30-year-old star of Star Trek and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
Twitch Film reported on the news, and like their announcement that Josh Brolin is Mandate's top pick to star in Spike Lee's Oldboy, it's important to take the information with a grain of salt. No deal has been made, and there's no indication that Pine is in talks. But if it's true, it does indicate the kind of direction MGM wants to take its Robocop remake: young and sexy.
Young and sexy. Not two words normally equated with Paul Verhoeven's Robocop, a gritty-as-hell science-fiction tale about a society rotting from within, corruption at the highest levels of authority and capitalism gone amok. Padilha is a pretty hardcore director though, so maybe this is just an idea thrown in his direction by producers looking to make the picture "hip." Personally we think this is more a job for Dominic Cooper or Tom Hardy.
Time will tell if there's any validity to this. In any case, we'll keep you posted.
CRAVE Online will return with more Robocop news, which we'll buy for a dollar.
