Escape From New York is going back to the slammer: after along devlopment process with directors like Live Free or Die Hard's Len Wiseman and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines' Jonathan Mostow attached to direct, New Line has decided to let their option drop. Deadline told the tale.
The original film told the story of former American hero turned wanted fugitive Snake Plissken, who is coerced into saving the American president after Air Force One crashlands into Manhattan, an island which had been turned into a gigantic maximum-security penitentiary. John Carpenter's film was a milestone in geek culture, turning former Disney star Kurt Russell into a badass forever and contributing to the popularity of electronic music with Carpenter's own futuristic score. The clean concept, dark tone and memorable characters have made it a genre classic, and ripe for remakification.
Many of you may be partying like it's 1997, the far-flung futuristic year in which the original movie took place, at the news. Us? We're too tired from Comic Con to say anything other than, "Call me zzzzzz…"
CRAVE Online will return with more Escape From New York news as it calls us "Snake."
