Not since 1982's Cimarron has Cadillac released a compact four door model. The only notable exception is the Saab 9-3 based Cadillac BLS, which was made for the European market and not available in North America. This week the luxury brand released a teaser of a new compact luxury sedan code named "ATS".
As you can see in the official photo below the car closely follows the design of the mid-sized CTS line. The new compact will be positioned to compete with entry level BMW, Mercedes and Audi models. The new compact will also give them a lower priced entry car to complement the more expensive XTS model (which replaces the STS and DTS models) announced last year.
“The car we codenamed ATS is being developed to be a driver's car on an all-new Cadillac-specific RWD-AWD architecture,” GM North America President Mark Reuss said. “We have extensively and exhaustively studied the competitive segment, and we have benchmarked the best. And when this car comes out, that will be readily apparent.”
The Cadillac ATS will start production next year in the same Lansing, Michigan plant where the CTS model is produced.
