Yup, this was bound to happen. Once again, video games are being targeted as the root cause for real world violence, this time for the recent London riots that have lead to 160 arrests after an unarmed man was shot dead by police officers.
The London Evening Standard has run a story where an unnamed London constable has gone on record saying, “Go home, get a takeaway and watch anything that happens on TV. These are bad people who did this. Kids out of control. When I was young it was all Pac-man and board games. Now they're playing Grand Theft Auto and want to live it for themselves."
Yes, clearly. Real world violence and, more specifically, riots did not exist until Grand Theft Auto was created in 1997. Then everything fell apart. That logic is absolutely bulletproof.
At this point, it’s honestly just sad to see video games once again become the scapegoat for any/all violent outbursts. What’s maybe even more depressing is that this happens frequently enough that we’ve come to expect it, just as the sun rises in the east. Video games remain the easy target for the ill informed. Can this ignorance please stop. Please?
