Jeremy Renner sure seems to love robbing banks. Wouldn't you? The Hurt Locker star earned his second Oscar nomination for Ben Affleck's heist drama The Town and then seemed to turn to heroism with The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy, but you can't keep a bad man donw. Now he's back doing what he does best: stealing your hard-earned money. And no, we're not just talking about the inflated ticket prices.
Deadline reports that Renner is now attached to star in King of Heists, based on the nonfiction book by J. North Conway. He'll play George Leslie, who along with his gang was responsible for up to 80% of all the bank robberies in America between 1874 and 1884, and whose involvement in said crimes wasn't even revealed until after his own death. Over the course of that time Leslie stole up to $12 million, which would be fairly respectable today, but if you adjust for inflation that's roughly $247 billion. What can we say? The guy was good. He spent the last few years of his life as a consultant for other robbers, but ultimately met with a violent end. His murder was never solved.
King of Heists will be written by Will Staples, a screenwriter on the rise. He recently sold a mysterious sci-fi/fantasy script called Myth to James Cameron and Lorenzo di Bonnaventura for Sam Worthington to star in, and the upcoming films Apaches and World's Most Wanted.
