Ever since "Mad Men" came along, television executives have been looking for the next great period series to compete with it. And while the recent failure of "The Playboy Club" could be seen as a discouraging sign, most observers still believe that there is room for another '60s era series on TV… if it's done right.
Enter "Magic City," an upcoming show coming to Starz next year. Created by screenwriter Mitch Glazer (and inspired by his youth), "Magic City" begins in 1959 just after Fidel Castro seizes power in Cuba. The resulting power vacuum sees a vast increase in organized crime in Miami, particularly at the newly opened Miramar Playa; a pristieguous hotel that brings in the top entertainers, politicians and mobsters.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars as Ike Evans, the Jewish-American owner of the Miramar Playa who finds himself in over his head as he deals with a powerful mob boss, Ben “The Butcher” Diamond (Danny Huston) to keep the hotel running while trying to keep his wife, Vera (Olga Kurylenko) from discovering the price that Evans has to pay to hold on to what he has built for himself.
Although the series is still several months away, Starz has released the first teaser trailer to give viewers a sample of what they can expect when "Magic City" hits the air.
Jessica Marais, Steven Strait, Elena Satine, Christian Cooke and Dominik Garcia-Lorido are slated to co-star in "Magic City;" along with Kelly Lynch, Michael Rispoli, Yul Vázquez, Seymour Cassel and Taylor Miller.
"Magic City" is expected to debut in the spring of 2012.
