Back in the middle of September, it was announced that DC Universe Online would be adopting a free-to-play model in October. Unfortunately, Sony Online Entertainment will be missing that October date, but they still intend to keep their promise: DCU Online will officially go free to play on November 1, 2011.
As previously reported by IGN, free-to-play adopters will have limited access to the title. Essentially, Sony is breaking the game into three membership tiers. There’s the free-to-play membership, which offers a limited number of character slots, a cap on in-game currency and fewer inventory slots, as well as other limitations. Then there’s the “premium” membership, which runs you $5 and offers up the game plus a number of bonuses. And finally, the “Legendary” membership will cost you the typical $15 per month, but you get access to everything the game offers, plus free updates and expansions.
Sony’s decision to break DCU Online into three membership brackets could wind up working out for them by getting a lot more people to test the waters via the free option, find it enjoyable, then pony up the change to make “Legendary” status. I’m sure that’s Sony’s intention with this plan. Time will tell if it pays off.
