America has had some real nasty serial killers. Ed Gein started us off with his flesh lampshades and woman-suit, inspiring half the horror movies ever made. Terrors like John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Aileen Wurnos, Dennis Rader, and Zodiac roamed our backyard. Heck, I share a birthday with the infamous Jeffery Dahmer.
We share it with Mr. T too. Guess who people draw the comparison to?
But other than Jack the Ripper, we don't often talk about the monsters that stalk the night in other countries. It turns out there are scarier things out there in the world than we could ever imagine.
Yang Xinhai, "Monster Killer" of China
Let's paint a picture. You are a farmer in China, living with your wife and children. You live in the middle of your farmland, meaning that there is no one to hear you scream. But you don't mind. You've lived here all your life. You are used to the quiet, and you've never seen an American horror movie, so you really have no reason to be worried. Then, there is a knock at the door…
Being the gentle soul you are, you open the door for your strange late night guest. Yang Xinhai responds by embedding an axe in your chest. Then he rapes any females in the house, and then he kills everybody. With meat cleavers and hammers and shovels. Then he leaves you all to nature till someone happens by.
I don't know about you, but I think that's scarier than any Friday the 13th flick. And it totally happened. A bunch of times. By the time he was caught, it was proven that he had killed 67 people. That's more than the Boston Strangler, BTK and "South Africa's Ted Bundy" Moses Sithole combined. Sidenote: I would end up killing someone with a name like Moses Sithole too, especially if everyone around had a South African accent. I mean, come on, guys. You gotta work on those S's and this sit won't happen.
Back on Yang Xinhai, here are some things worth knowing about him. When initially arrested, he said that all 67 murders were because he was pissed about a break-up. After being pressed on the matter, he said the following:
"When I killed people I had a desire (to kill more). This inspired me to kill more. I don't care whether they deserve to live or not. It is none of my concern…I have no desire to be part of society. Society is not my concern."
That was his excuse for brutally murdering more people than you've had sex with. Fortunately, he was executed in 2004 by firing squad.
But he will live forever in our nightmares…
Luis Garavito, "La Bestia" of Columbia
I include Luis Garavito for no reason more this: He has murdered more people than any other serial killer in recorded history. And, if you thought it couldn't get any worse, they were all young boys. He also raped most of them. This was not a pleasant guy.
Actually, the three serial killers at the top of the "most confirmed victim" list on Wikipedia are all Columbian. Which just blows my mind. Are the Columbian police really that useless? All three of these guys were child-murderers and rapists. What could the Columbian Police possibly be dealing with that is more important than this?
To their credit, it's difficult to catch a stereotype. Luis tempted children with money or candy, went with a walk with them, and then overpowered them when they got tired. I assume he then threw them into an unmarked white van, chased a blonde up some stairs and took off his face to reveal kindly old Mr. Levey.
Thankfully, he too is off the streets… for now. Despite being caught and convicted, he was sentenced to a total of 22 years. I think for cooperating, or something. Columbia clearly needs to get their act together. Eventually, they managed to work around Columbia's controversial "Protecting Child Killers" laws and tack on a few extra years. How? By finding proof of more than the 140 murders that he confessed to.
Columbia, where 140 murdered children just aren't enough.
