Last week, "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Suter jumped on his twitter account and said that the upcoming fourth season finale had three episodes' worth of story, however FX wasn't able to accommodate his request for a two hour finale or an extra episode to close things out. But apparently, SAMCRO has come away victorious again.
FX has officially announced that it has extended the fourth season of "Sons of Anarchy" to 14 episodes, with the season finale now set to air on Tuesday, December 06.
“Creatively, this has been 'Sons’' best and biggest season ever,” exclaimed FX's Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Nick Grad. “Kurt asked us to consider adding an extra episode to fully close this current chapter of the Sons saga. By adding the extra episode, it wraps up a magnificent season in extraordinary fashion. This is a real bonus for fans of the series.”
The decision to extend "Sons of Anarchy" for an additional episode couldn't have been too hard, given that the fourth season is averaging 5.45 million viewers per episode; which also makes the fourth season the highest rated in the series' history. With multiple airings added to the viewing totals, "Sons of Anarchy" brings in 8.51 million viewers per week.
The tenth episode of the current season will air on Tuesday night at10pm; which will prove to be a critical installment for Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and Tara (Maggie Siff) as they get a taste of freedom from SAMCRO before certain events are set in motion that can't be taken back. Viewers will also see a darker side of Clay (Ron Perlman); which will make it clear that an epic confrontation is in the cards… and not everyone will make it through the finale.
Earlier this fall, FX renewed "Sons of Anarchy" for a fifth season; which will debut in the fall of 2012.
