5 Most Desirable Head Coaching Jobs in Sports

Ranking the 5 coaching jobs anyone would jump for.

With the announcing of Bobby Valentine as the next manager of the Boston Red Sox, one of the greatest franchises in the MLB, that got me thinking of what would be some of the greatest head coaching/managing jobs to be found across the sports world. To that end, here are my top five teams I imagine anyone would jump through fire to coach.

5. Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers represent a history of tradition and winning, with 17 titles under their belt and arguably one of the greatest players of all time still on their roster. While there are teams like the Boston Celtics that also share a rich history, the Lakers get the nod because of location as well as accomplishments. In Los Angeles, you are under lights far brighter than anywhere else and while the pressure is higher, so too are the rewards for success.

4. Ohio State (football)

Tradition, tradition, tradition, that's the name of the game and there is no team in college football with a bigger sense of that than the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes are almost always in the National Title picture (this year notwithstanding) and can gather recruits in droves based on name alone. Don't believe the value of this position then just ask Urban Meyer who just left a cushy broadcast job a year after he retired to grab the Head coaching position of OSU.

3. North Carolina (basketball)

UNC is almost unanimously known as the greatest basketball school in the land and anyone would jump at the chance to coach there. With five NCAA Tourney Championships and 17 Conference tournament titles, this team is as premier as you can get. They also have a grand history of recruiting top players with Michael Jordan topping that list.

2, Pittsburgh Steelers

Sorry Dallas Cowboys, the title for America's team is now in the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are the royal family of the NFL and carry with them a rich history of winning and more importantly, continuity. In an era where the average lifespan for a head coach with his team in the NFL seems to be barely more than a year, you can count on at least a decade when you are with the Steelers. This franchise also travels the best in the country with fans coming in droves to every game, giving even a road game a home feel.

1. New York Yankees

The Yankees get the nod as the most desirable head coaching position due largely to the rich cultural impact this organization has had on our country. Baseball, though waning in recent years, is as synonymous to America as our flag and the Yankee's are this sports biggest and brightest icon. They are consistent contenders and win or lose; they will always be at the front of every sports page for every move they make. While this puts an enormous amount of pressure on any coach, the potential for if you get it right is astronomical.
