Benicio Del Toro Turns Down ‘Star Trek 2’

The Oscar-winning star won't play Khan, Mudd, a Gorn or anyone else for that matter.

Oh well.

About a month ago now, the internet was all abuzz with the news that Benicio Del Toro, star of Traffic and The Wolfman, had been offered the role of the villain in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2, or whatever the heck it's going to be called. But just because he was offered a big role in one of the most anticipated movies on the horizon didn't mean he was actually going to accept it. Vulture has just reported that he's turned down the chance to play… whoever he was going to play.

And that, really, should be the end of it, but oh no… Everyone has to speculate on who the hell he was actually going to play. Latino Review claims it's Khan, the villain from the first Star Trek 2, aptly subtitled The Wrath of Khan. Hitfix claims otherwise, with a quote from Abrams himself stating matter-of-factly, "Not true." Then again, Latino Review reminded us all that Zack Snyder also said, pretty matter-of-factly, that Zack Snyder said the villain in Man of Steel wasn't going to be General Zod, and… Well, we all know how that turned out.

We enjoy healthy speculation about geek movies as much as the next person, but even we have to admit that this is getting ridiculous. The villain in Star Trek 2 has been decided by the filmmakers and it will be someone, damn it, and we'll find out who exactly that is in due course. Let's all just take a deep breath and wait for someone to make an official announcement, because we are definitely circling the rumor mill's drain at this point.

That said, we still kinda hope it's Khan.

CraveOnline will be back with more Star Trek 2 or you'll have to kill us both, Spock!
