The pilot episode for Ricky Gervais' Derek was divisive to say the least. Some felt it was heartwarming, some thought it was offensive, while others simply didn't watch it because Life's Too Short was a black hole of laughter with a premise centred around the idea that watching dwarves fall over is funny.

Personally, I found the pilot to be surprisingly touching, but ultimately marred by an awkward performance by writer/actor Gervais, whose portrayal of Derek (who he has assured us is not mentally disabled) was not so much offensive as it was downright ridiculous.

The first trailer for Derek, set to air in the UK in early 2013 on Channel 4, sees Gervais continue his slack-jawed performance of care worker Derek Noakes, with An Idiot Abroad star Karl Pilkington also reprising his role as the unfortunately coiffed janitor Dougie. Kerry Godliman also stars.
