It’s been a long time since Syfy was known for some of the best genre shows on TV. After the era of “Farscape,” “Battlestar Galactica” and the “Stargate” franchise passed, Syfy basically reinvented itself as a slightly stranger version of the USA Network, complete with reality shows and wrestling.
Last year’s “Ascension” was supposed to be the start of Syfy’s return to form. But the network better known for Sharknado sequels has another TV series coming that could put it back on the map.
“The Expanse” is a straight-to-series adaptation of the novels by James S.A. Corey (the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). Set 200 years in the future, “The Expanse” explores a completely colonized solar system as conflict arises between the people on Earth, Mars and the other colonies.
At the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Syfy unveiled the first teaser trailer for “The Expanse,” which seems to have a much darker and adult tone than “Ascension” managed to pull off. Although some of the themes from “Ascension” are revisited, the zero gravity sex scene is a nice touch.
Thomas Jane leads the cast of “The Expanse” alongside Shohreh Aghdashloo, Chad Coleman, Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham and Florence Faivre. Paulo Costanzo, Jay Hernandez, Jared Harris and Shawn Doyle have recurring roles in the series.
The ten episode first season of “The Expanse” will premiere later in 2015.
