Super Bowl In Canada

American commercials are coming (soon) and comedy routines.

As Tom Brady’s New England Patriots gear up to take on the Seattle Seahawks, Canada is gearing up for its own kind of Super Bowl, one that includes a weekend of comedy specials and American commercials (finally!).

The Comedy Network steps into the end zone this Super Bowl weekend and scores the premiere of the Key & Peele Super Bowl Special, Friday January 30th at 10pm on Comedy. Airing two days before CTV’s broadcast of SUPER BOWL XLIX on Sunday Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. ET, the one-hour sketch comedy special is set to feature new vignettes from the hilarious duo of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, and special guest appearances from soon-to-be announced NFL stars. Using the ever-so-popular sports news-desk format, Key & Peele are set to make this Super Bowl less deflated than ever before with a reunion of Craig Robinson & the Nasty Delicious as the halftime entertainment, and a special edition of the famous “East-West Bowl” sketch.

Meanwhile, the CRTC recently announced that it will allow the US commercials to air in Canada… starting with Super Bowl 2016. The federal regulator has made it illegal for broadcasters to use simultaneous substitution (“simsub”) for the game (as it stands now, networks like CTV and City can swap their own signal and ads over the American feed, where the same show airs at the same time, generating substantial ad revenue) (The Globe and Mail). At least it’s something to look forward to when next year’s Super Bowl rolls around.

Super Bowl coverage in Canada begins on CTV this Sunday with a 6:30pm kickoff start.
